Welcome to Eden Lutheran Church!

Serving Christ and Community since 1888

Eden Lutheran Church was founded in 1888 as the Scandinavian Evangelical Lutheran Eden Church, an immigrant congregation of Riverside’s Swedish community in the early days of the new city.

The original church was located in downtown Riverside on 11th and Orange Streets.  Frank Miller, the owner of the Mission Inn, was agent for the original property sale and donated his $100 commission to the church.  The congregation grew along with the city, although it maintained its roots and continued offering Swedish language services through the 1930s.

The growing congregation purchased a new site on Brockton Avenue in 1945 and began work on the current building with thousands of volunteer hours donated by members of the congregation. The building was dedicated in 1953.  The Fellowship Hall and classrooms were added throughout the 1950s.

Eden’s stained glass windows were designed, made, and installed by Judson Studios in Los Angeles.  The aisles feature scenes from the life of Christ and the Clerestory depicts important symbols of church history, including the Old Testament figures, St. Andrew, St. Paul, Martin Luther’s 95 Theses, the Old Swedes’ Church (the first Lutheran Church in America), and the original Eden in downtown Riverside.

The rose window in the balcony is one of Eden’s most distinctive features.  It shows Christ the King in the center surrounding by the four writers of the Gospel and representations of the Lord’s Supper and Holy Baptism.  These sacraments are also featured in the windows in the Apse, on each side above the altar.  The two windows in the Choir Loft represent the music of the church: the Harp and the Pipes.  On the opposite side, a stained glass window of Christ blessing the children is on display in the Baptistry along with a cross-shaped window.

The blue paint and stenciling were done by the men of the congregation and represent the grapevine, and the colors may reflect the congregation’s Scandinavian heritage.

One of Eden’s most distinct features is the Thorvaldsen statue of Christ.  The original statue is located in Denmark and is well known throughout the world.  The statue in Eden’s sanctuary was carved in Italy.  The position of Christ’s body welcomes all who come to him, and the position of the face encourages the viewer to look up at it, especially during communion.

The organ was dedicated in 1966 and was used by Music Minister Dale Wood, a musicologist and author of the hymn “Christ Has Made A Sure Foundation.”

Eden Lutheran has been dedicated to serving Christ and community since 1888.  Our mission is to love God and all people in Jesus Christ, drawing others into a relationship with Him and working together to expand His reign of hope, justice, and peace in our community and the world.  We are a part of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA) and we seek to live the ELCA’s motto: “God’s Work, Our Hands.”

In 2017, we commemorated 500 years since Martin Luther posted his “Ninety-Five Theses” in Wittenberg, Germany on October 31, 1517, and sparked the Protestant Reformation.  At the heart of the Reformation was a deep conviction that God’s grace is given freely to all.  When Luther and others learned to trust God’s mercy with “a living, daring confidence,” they discovered in their faith the freedom to give generously and lovingly in all of life’s undertakings with everyone they met.  This grace is at the core of our faith as Lutherans.

We gather Sunday mornings at 10 am and throughout the week for fellowship, study, choir, quilters, lunch packers, outreach, and service.

All are welcome.
